Big Brothers Home Energy Saving or Forced Encouragement.

The European Union has banned the production and import of the 100 watt incandescent light bulb in a bid to force renewable energy.

For over 100 years the incandescent light bulb has burned bright ever since Thomas Edison Joseph Swan invented the the power inefficient device. These electric bulbs can only convert around 20% of the energy used in to light, the other 80% is mostly converted in to heat and generally wasted

incandescent light bulb For many years no energy saving replacements have been around and have been easily taken up for many uses. Fluorescent lights are ideal energy savers that use up to 80% less electricity then their banned counterparts. In power plant scale where before we used 5 dirty CO2 polluting coal power plants to light out homes changing to energy efficient bulbs will no only need just one.

Not everybody is happy and for some the flashing produced by fluorescent lights do cause some people discomfort to their eyes. Other misguided people see it as invasion of their rights as citizens. More modern bulbs have taken care of the flickering by operating at far higher frequencies and are more versatile with much more styles and colours available.

The cost of the cleaner bulbs are a bit higher but this is easily offset by the power savings. That can be between US$60-$100 a year less energy used. Less energy used means less CO2 produced and less harm to our future.

We can also look forward to the future where the new guy on the block , LED Lighting. This type of lighting is even more efficient and versatile. The Low voltage LED is not just a light bulb replacement, it is extremely versatile and has been used as Television Screens to Car Lights to Decorative lighting.
