Reducing your electrical costs with rooftop solar panels.
The days of just thinking solar power is something you see in science fiction movies producing power for some lone settlement on a distant planet are long gone. Your home can easily become more self sufficient in energy and all you need are the rays of the Sun.
Installation will depend on your particular type of home, if you live on the 24th floor of a tower block then you might just have some problems without having your own roof. Older homes may need some extra support in the roof space. But your not just limited to large arrays of solar panels mounted on your roof, integrated roof tiles are becoming more common where the actual roof tiles are the solar panels so you can still keep the style your your house the same without making it look like a monstrosity.

Rooftop Solar Panel
The initial outlay of buying the solar panels and the installation could be quite expensive but as the panels themselves become more abundant and efficient then the cost will naturally reduce. You probably wont produce enough electricity to completely power your home but you could reduce your electrical costs by 30%-40% or even more.
The benefits just don’t stop there, you are now your own self contained power station. This means you can actually sell your excess electricity back to your utility supplier. Think of when your not at home, holidays, weekends away or just while your out at work during the day. The solar cells are still capable of producing power and as its not being used, let somebody else use it. So that’s more savings on both your pocket and carbon pollution thrown up into the air by unenvironmental power stations.
Changing all your electrical appliances to energy efficient models can reduce your power consumption significantly and thus making you still more less-dependant on using power supplied by your electricity company. But this is probably and extreme for most home-owners unless they are actually purchasing a new television or dishwasher, etc.
Just starting with the solar panels is enough, reducing your power costs. The running cost is virtually nothing, just the occasional check once a year to make sure the panels and fittings are secure. You have no moving parts, no oil changes. Although there is one task that might need to be performed, if you already clean your guttering then you might also need to clean your solar panels to remove those stuck leaves or soot that may have settled, in effect a yearly wash, nothing more.

[...] Ground source heat pumps are another form of extracting natural free energy that can be used to warm your home and reduce your energy costs. Pipes buried a few feet under your garden or lawn can draw the heat from the ground. A few feet below the surface the ground temperature is more stable than on the surface, so while you may have a layer of snow on your lawn, underneath the ground temperature is fairly constant. That ground heat can be extracted easily for your home use. Ideally installation should be done with a new build as excavation work is required and may require some form of machinery heavier than a garden spade. Coiled pipes are laid in trenches under you garden covering as much area as possible to maximize the heat transfer, smaller gardens may require laying the piping vertically to gain as much contact area as possible, this would involve deeper digging than a larger lawn where the coils can be laid flat. Once that is complete the trenches are refilled and your garden is restored back to its normal appearance. Water, with some antifreeze, is then circulated around the pipes returning warmer than when it entered full of free heat. Now what can you do with this heat? Underfloor heating, where another layer of piping is laid under your floor to provide warmth all year round as well keeping your energy costs down. A small amount of electricity is needed to run the heat pumps and economically this could be acquired from solar power via your rooftop solar panels. [...]
