Solar Generators For Homes
An offshoot of home solar energy is a system designed to provide backup power for your residence when the grid goes down. Providing backup power with a solar generator is a catchy clean idea to replace noisy gas powered generators.
At the time of writing forest fires are racing across California and this is going to cause power outages in many homes, some that might not even be close to the raging fires. Or maybe just those occasional faults when the grid goes down and it will take hours or days to repair. You are left at home without any power to run your electrical goods. The Freezer and refrigerator starts to thaw and your food starts to waste. The television doesn’t work and you cant keep up with the latest news that might affect your safety.

Solar Array
Taking those events and others that may happen, you might be considering a solar power generator for backup power.
How do they work?
Solar generators are just like large solar batter chargers but instead of being used to power your mobile phone or music player, they are designed to power your home. Solar energy from the sun is captured by photovoltaic solar panels and stored in a bank of batteries. This is a continual process keeping the batteries always charged up and ready for use when that emergency may arrive. The batteries can be connected to your home to power yours electrical goods by a device called an inverter. This converts the solar energy stored in the batteries up to voltage that is capable of running your home.
Do they really work?
Yes. But. Solar Generator systems generally perform quite poorly. Their ability to power electrical appliances in your home is limited due to their small storage capacity. Lights could be powered for days but if you want to power your washing machine then you should get used to wearing dirty clothes.
Be wary of reviews that promise electrical power for very little cost and try to convince you that backup solar generators will somehow keep you safe during those brownouts. The storage capacity of most of those systems are really designed for portable living. Pulling a trailer designed for solar generation behind your RV during those summer trips is a more practical use as the electrical equipment is much more efficient and designed to work off lower voltages.
Solar power for my home is useless?
No, A proper solar installation on your residence will perform much better. Fixing solar panels to your roof to supplement or even totally replace your electrical usage is a much better way to power your home during those emergency times. During darkness you can be forgiven for using a portable gas powered generator. With their greater capacity this will power more of your household goods and be much safer.
Using solar generator systems for low power portable appliances is the ideal use here, for your residence or business they do not generate the needed capacity for practical use.
