With all this talk about solar energy, photvoltaic panels and thermal energy, it might be time to take a short step back and think about what exactly is solar energy?
Without getting all too scientific, it all starts in that big yellow ball in the sky we see in the daytime, The sun or Sol to give it its proper name. The sun is huge nuclear reactor that emits radiation. Radiation in the form of light which we experience every day, it also give out other forms of radiation which we cant normally see with out eyes. Although radiation is generally not a good thing, our atmospheres acts as a filter to keep out anything harmful, but at the same time letting through enough good radiation to give life to our planet..

Solar Energy has been used by the earth since the earth was created and you use the results of this energy every day. Coal, Oil and natural Gas are all products of solar energy derived from plants and animals that lived millions of years ago. All the wood, plants and food that we eat are the results of solar energy. Daily, we see the effects of the sun in our weather, wind and rain are all products of solar energy.
We consume all this energy, but most of it takes a very long time, millions of years for out, to produce and the waste products such as CO2 will harm that protective filter that keeps us safe, the atmosphere.
So the logical thing to do is to protect the atmosphere and harness the solar energy that we use today without waiting millions of years. With solar photovoltaic panels we can harness the sun and produce electricity without burning coal or oil in a power station. We can heat our homes with ground source heat pumps and we can wash in warm water heated by solar hot water panels without using fuels that take millions of years to make.
Many of our little gadgets we use, be it MP3 players, mobile phones, flashlights and even garden lighting can be solar powered. The wonderful thing about this energy is that is abundant, the earth receives much much more energy then we could consume and taking a little bit for ourselves will not be missed. Solar energy will not create any waste products and no harmful gasses to break down our protective atmosphere.
We don`t need to reply on importing our energy from other countries, in fact it is perfectly possible that we would not need to import energy from outside out home. Every home or building has the possibility to be completely self serviced in power and heat by the use of solar energy products. The means no cost to you or your business.
So the question again was “what is solar energy”. Solar energy is SAVING MONEY for you.
