Tunisia Embraces the Desertec Project
Tunisia is the latest north African country to embrace the Desertec Project.
With 40 projects announces which range from water heating to wind electrical generation. The projects will help reduce the causes of climate change and boost energy co-operation between countries surrounding the Mediterranean.
It is hoped that up the developments will be equivalent of 22% of the energy production by the year 2016. This would equate to over 600 thousands tons of oil and a reduction of 133 thousand tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
As oil becomes harder to extract and competition for the resources becomes more severe many countries are looking to offset the need by using solar energy projects. This is of most concern for those smaller countries that import large amounts of energy and are looking for more secure energy production as a matter of national security.
Desertec is a consortium of companies backed by the EU and hopes to create a network of solar power plants along the north African coast and Middle East. It`s aim is to a network build solar thermal power stations covering areas of the Sahara and Arabian Deserts.
