The Japanese Electronics Giant, Sanyo, is ramping up its production of Lithium-Ion batteries for the Automobile market. Having just recently completed work on the construction of a factory in Kasai, Japan, Sanyo is already opening new production lines.

The new assembly lines at the factory will increase the out put of batteries by 150%. Currently 2 lines are in operation and with the addition of 2 more lines, along with increased efficiency in production, Sanyo will be one of the leading producers of batteries.

As car makers start to produce more models that are Electrically Powered the demand will increase and in the long run this could see prices ultimately drop. This in turn will make those clean Electrical Vehicles much cheaper for the consumer.

Currently the Kasai factory produces around one million battery cells each month. With an investment of 15 billion Yen, Sanyo will be positioning itself as one of the leaders in automotive battery production.

Lithium-Ion batteries are made from Cobalt and are somewhat more recyclable and less toxic than other forms of electrical storage.

The Electric Car may be in for a performance boost as the technology behind the battery packs sparks into life. Manufacturers have been erring on the side of caution and limiting their performance to increase the life span.

The massive pack of batteries in Electric Vehicles is probably the most expensive component in these new forms of transport and this has put the breaks on their performance to increase their usable lifespan.

Lithium Ion batteries, the same material that is used in your portable devices like cameras and notepads, does degrade under extreme usage. The main factor here is what is called the “Deep Discharge”, using the batteries until their capacity is nearly zero.

Electric Vehicle Manufacturers have implemented limits on the amount of discharge the Lithium Ion battery is allowed. While the life of the battery is extended this means the performance, and specifically the driving mileage is reduced before you have to pop in to the nearest charging station. Can you imaging filling up your combustion engine driven car and only being able to use half a tank of gas before you need to fill up again. This is the situation for electric.

That is the bad news, there is good news of course. Using the data from the usage of the current electric cars manufactures have realized that they can release some of the limits imposed on the battery packs. The outcome is two fold here, the first is that using the same battery pack, your electric vehicle will be able to vastly increase their range. Secondly if range is not a factor then the size and weight of the battery can be perhaps halved.

The packs are costly and heavy, being able to reduce cost means much cheaper cars on the road and the added bonus means less eight that your car has to carry around. Those early generation vehicles like all first generation goods will lead the way to much better descendants. We just have to think about the performance and size of recent electrical devices like television screens and computer specifications. The battery packs will improve vastly and who knows how far our electric car will take us in the next decade.

Panasonic have revealed snippets of information about their Lithium-Ion storage device which will be suitable for domestic use.

Clean Energy production in the home is dynamic and for the home user the need for storage devices for that excess electricity has been a problem. Large banks of lead-acid batteries can be costly and take up too much space. The Li-on battery are the high capacity storage that we have in out electronic equipment – mobile phones, laptops and digital cameras.

Scaling up the battery is not easy, heat is the major problem and it now seems that Panasonic may have all that solved. In a few years we could have the promise of large capacity rechargeable batteries that will be suitable for home use.

Electrical generation by solar panels can be stored easily now for later use, although any from of electricity can be stored not just what is generated by your renewable source. Occasionally the utility supply has its little problems and the lights go out. The high capacity battery pack will take care of your needs till the power comes back on. Charge up your battery on cheap low rate electricity at night and use it to power your home during that day when the rates go to peak cost.

The uses are not only limited to the home. Electric vehicles which are going to be commonplace by the end of this decade are ideal candidates for these.

The technology of electrical storage should see many developments in both home use and for commercial use. The current problems with renewable energy production like solar and wind is that its not always on. The wind is not always blowing and solar has that little problem with darkness. High capacity and safe batteries could keep that energy stored for when it is needed.
