Don’t throw away your batteries just yet. But on developments at the Imperial College in the United Kingdom might see us all with portable products that do not need batteries in the future.

The Brits are working on lightweight materials that can store electricity, but you may be asking is that just a battery. In a sense it is still a battery but a one that can have extra properties. Their idea here is for casings and housing to be made of this carbon fibre material that can doubly act as a power storage medium.

The polymer resin could be moulded in to casings for portable products like mobile phones and mp3 players allowing them to be smaller and lighter as there are no internal batteries needed.

On a larger scale maybe cars and trucks could be made partly from this material reducing the overall weight and thus needing less energy to power the vehicle. Combining this with other interesting developments in solar generating casings and you have quite a brilliant concept. Throw out the batteries and have your portable device casings generate and store the power need to operate your devices.

Opponents of solar energy production often cite the fact that no energy is produced when the sun doesn’t shine. That is a fact that cannot be dismissed. Solar storage is possible, on the small scale we have the portable solar battery charges for your mobile phones and mp3 players. These, while enough to power those small devices, are not practical for more energy hungry devices in your home.

For photovoltaic solar users off grid this has meant either a large bank of lead acid batteries or a fall back to using a gas based generator. Those still connected to the grid will end up taking night time power from their utility company.

Cerametic, a Salt lake bases company, have recently unveiled a prototype battery that could help the problem of energy storage for solar panels users. The device is small fitting practically in the palm of your hand, well a large hand. Using a sodium-sulphur based mixture as opposed to the load acid batteries that you may be currently using.

With a stated energy capacity of 20kwh, that is more than enough to take most households through the night and into much of the next day without having to tap in to the grid for your electrical power.

This small size along with their energy capacity make them idea for solar energy users. The estimated price tag is around US$2000, while quite costly is comparable with other energy storage systems. As these batteries are virtually the first of their kind, the technology will be perfected and it could be the opening of a new wave in energy storage.

Then it wont matter if the sun don’t shine for residential solar users.
