Light Emitting Diodes (LED) lighting is proving to be extremely efficient and producing some unwanted side effects.

Their use in Traffic Lighting has proved to be a great way for cities and towns around the world to save on energy and also as they last much longer than traditional light bubs they need less maintenance.

A deficiency or unwanted side effect has started to occur more frequently in areas that experience snaps of cold weather. Normal old style incandescent lights use up a lot of their energy producing heat which is generally wasted. This does have one bonus that it melts snow and ice. Now that winter is upon is, LED Traffic lights are getting choked up with snow and ice and causing chaos in the traffic lanes.

We should look at this as a fault in the implementation and probably as some unexpected consequence rather than a deficiency of LED’s. A redesign incorporating some temperature activated heating element might be the solution or a different style of housing.

There is no doubt that LED lighting is here to stay. With a bulb lifespan of year instead of months and an energy usage of 80% less than incandescent lighting they are proving to be a great saving in energy costs. This is especially more so when you have to power vast numbers of lights such as for traffic control.

Until that happens, city workers will be busier going around and cleaning the lights during the cold weather. If you are a driver a little more care should be taken while out driving in the colder weather.
